According to a spokesperson for the San Francisco Police Department, OpenAI whistleblower Suchir Balaji was found dead in his San Francisco apartment on Buchanan Street on November 26. First responders were called to his home to perform a wellness check. On their arrival, they found the body of a deceased adult male. During their initial investigation, they ruled there was no evidence of foul play.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, David Serrano Sewell, Director of the San Francisco Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, later confirmed 26-year-old Balaji as the deceased person and officially ruled the manner of his death as a suicide. The medical examiner also said that it had already notified Balaji’s family before making a statement to the press.

Speaking with FOX News Digital on the apparent suicide death of its former employee, and whistleblower, Suchir Balaji, a spokesperson for OpenAI, the company that developed ChatGPT, said, “We are devastated to learn of this incredibly sad news today and our hearts go out to Suchir’s loved ones during this difficult time.”

It’s reported that the death of OpenAI Whistleblower Suchir Balaji arrived after the AI (Artificial Intelligence) researcher raised concerns about the company allegedly violating copyright law. He shared his claims during an interview with The New York Times in October. Note: OpenAI and Microsoft are currently facing several lawsuits from media outlets accusing the former of breaking copyright laws.

According to The NY Times, Suchir Balaji resigned from OpenAI in August after working there for four years as an Artificial Intelligence Researcher. In a series of interviews, he told the publication that he decided to leave after coming to the conclusion that OpenAI had allegedly violated copyright laws in developing its AI technology. He also claimed that OpenAI was doing more harm than good for the internet and alleged that its platform ChatGPT was damaging society.

Balaji said, “If you believe what I believe, you have to just leave the company.” In a post shared to X in October, he also wrote, “I was at OpenAI for nearly 4 years and worked on ChatGPT for the last 1.5 of them. I initially didn’t know much about copyright, fair use, etc. but became curious after seeing all the lawsuits filed against GenAI companies.”

He continued, “When I tried to understand the issue better, I eventually came to the conclusion that fair use seems like a pretty implausible defense for a lot of generative AI products, for the basic reason that they can create substitutes that compete with the data they’re trained on.”
