The homelessness rate in the United States has increased by 18.1%, and federal officials believe the lack of affordable housing, devastating natural disasters, and a surge of migrant arrivals in major cities.

According to the Associated Press, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development revealed that over 770,000 people were counted as homeless during nationwide tallies conducted in January. These numbers do not include those who are staying with friends or family due to a lack of permanent housing.

HUD Secretary Adrianne Todman stated, “No American should face homelessness. The Biden administration is committed to combating this crisis. Our focus must remain on evidence-based solutions to prevent and end homelessness.” One significant trend in homelessness is the 40% increase in family homelessness, particularly in cities such as Denver, Chicago, and New York.

Natural disasters also contributed significantly to the rise. The catastrophic Maui wildfire of 2023, the deadliest in over a century, left more than 5,200 people in emergency shelters during the January count. Advocates and policymakers are pushing for more investments in affordable housing and support systems.

However, there has been an 8% decrease in homelessness among veterans due to federal programs, and major cities like Dallas and Los Angeles have seen significant declines.
