The celebrated “Mean Green Marching Machine” HBCU marching band from Mississippi Valley State University has received an invitation to perform in the 60th Presidential Inauguration Parade in Washington, D.C., on January 20, 2025, ushering Donald Trump into the White House for a second term as President.

The latest invitation arrives after years and traditions of national performances. Before Donald Trump’s inauguration, the HBCU marching band from Mississippi Valley State University performed in President Richard Nixon’s inaugural parade on January 20, 1969.

Speaking on the invite to perform at Donald Trump’s inauguration, Mississippi Valley State University President Dr. Jerryl Briggs said, “This is not just a moment of pride for our university but for the entire state of Mississippi. It is an opportunity to showcase our legacy, celebrate our culture, and invest in the future leaders of our community.” This participation allows students to engage in the peaceful transition of power and gain global exposure while celebrating the university’s 75th anniversary.”

Since being invited to perform at Donald Trump’s inauguration, the Mississippi Valley State University Marching Band accepted the invite and the HBCU is now asking for donations in an effort to raise money for the trip. The Mean Green of Mississippi Valley State University shows a goal of $13,000 raised and has achieved $3200 at the time of publishing this article.

However, in a post on X, the school wrote, “The MVSU ‘Mean Green Marching Machine’ has been invited to Washington, D.C., for the 60th Presidential Inauguration Parade! Help us raise $350K to make this historic moment a reality.” In an article on the school’s website, announcing the invitation, the HBCU explained, “The total cost of this historic trip, including travel, accommodations, meals, and equipment, is approximately $350,000. MVSU is committed to ensuring that every student can participate regardless of financial circumstances. The university asks alums, supporters, and the community to support this monumental endeavor.”

On the official page of their GoFundMe, the HBCU wrote, “The Mean Green Marching Machine Band of Mississippi Valley State University is seeking funds to travel to Washington, D.C., to participate in the Inaugural Parade. The band is seeking funds to acquire instruments, uniforms, provide scholarships, and get other essential resources for its continued development. We are making improvements to the band hall to facilitate band practice.”

The summary continued, “The “Mean Green Marching Machine” has around 250 individuals. The band has played on several stages, including the 60th Presidential Inauguration Parade, NBA games, the Rose Bowl Parade, New Orleans Mardi Gras parades, the National Showband Battle of the Bands, and other esteemed Battle of the Bands and parades. Throughout our history, we have succeeded in ensuring that over half of our students who enroll at the University also graduate. We are seeking financial assistance from our supporters in the United States to actualize this objective for the students. Your assistance is essential in helping us attain this esteemed opportunity.”
