James Gunn has officially ushered Batman into the DCU with a subtle but significant debut in the hit animated series Creature Commandos.

The most recent episode of the show features Gotham’s Dark Knight in only a shadowy glimpse. While brief, it’s a fun tease at the Caped Crusader’s place in the evolving DC Universe.

Gunn, who also directed the upcoming Superman, opened up about his approach to introducing Batman in Creature Commandos before a full-fledged live-action outing.

Gunn said: “When they first gave it to me, we saw a lot more Batman [Laughs]. I would say, ‘I’m not ready to commit to that…more silhouette!’ It’s a great way to show that Batman does exist.”

Rather than rehashing the character’s well-worn origin story, Gunn aims to establish Batman as a fully realized figure within the DCU.

He explained: “He already exists in this universe. Just like when we come to the Superman movie, we see that Superman already exists and is already known by the people of Metropolis. That’s just the way to introduce that Batman is a part of this universe.”

While speculation swirls about who will don the cowl for the DCU’s Bruce Wayne, Gunn kept his response to the identity of this Batman vague.

He said: “It’s the DCU Batman. I love Batman. I’ve loved him since I was a little kid. He’s one of my favorite characters…we’re going to do great things with him.”

Gunn’s enthusiasm extends to the possibility of a team-up with Superman, teasing fans with:

“He’s the most popular superhero in the world, and I can’t wait for people to see more of him along with Superman. And together…”

While projects like The Brave and the Bold and The Batman 2 are progressing slowly, Gunn’s strategic introduction of Batman in Creature Commandos lays the groundwork for exciting developments ahead.

With Clayface set to hit theaters next year, there’s growing speculation that it could serve as the perfect opportunity for the DCU’s Bruce Wayne to make a live-action appearance, even if only as a cameo.
