Filmmaker Tyler Perry has called out insurance companies over questionable decisions they made before the Los Angeles wildfires that left thousands of homes destroyed.

Amid the devastating fires, about 180,000 residents had to evacuate their homes and take shelter in safer grounds.

Several celebrities lost their homes while some others are helping out those in need as they count their losses.

Tyler Perry Calls Out Insurance Companies

On Sunday, Perry took to his Instagram page to blast insurance companies for canceling policies for Los Angeles homeowners before the wildfires.

He shared a statement that read, “Watching a daughter use a garden hose to try to protect her 90-year-old parents’ home because their insurance was canceled was just gut-wrenching to me.”

Perry questioned the power insurance firms had to hastily cancel policies, leaving people who had paid premiums all their lives with nothing.

He wrote, “Does anyone else find it appalling that insurance companies can take billions of dollars out of communities for years and then, all of a sudden, be allowed to cancel millions of policies for the very people they became rich on?”

The media mogul added, “People who have paid premiums all of their lives are left with nothing because of pure greed.”

In addition to calling out insurance companies over their perceived greed, Perry expressed his desire to help as many people as possible.

He shared, “As I am in the process of trying to figure out what steps to take to do all I can to help as many as I can, I am keeping everyone in my prayers.”

Many of the movie producer’s followers joined him in blasting the insurance companies’ actions, with some wondering if they had legal rights to cancel policies.

Actress and wellness influencer Gwendolyn Osborne-Smith asked, “My question is, how is this legal??”

Reality TV star Eva Marcille commented with a praying hand emoji, while a fan commented, “This is so sad! It’s all a game to THEM!”

Another fan thanked Perry for supporting families in this moment, while a third person wrote, “You’re an amazing boss I watched you step in so many situations like this in the last decade. Keep doing God’s work. Thank you.”

Why Tyler Perry Is Angry With The Insurance Companies

Perry has reasons for calling out the insurance companies, given their actions in the last year and its effect after the Los Angeles wildfires.

The Los Angeles Times reported that State Far General Insurance revealed in March 2024 that it would not renew 30,000 home and condominium policies after they expired. Over 1,600 of the affected policies were in Pacific Palisades, one of the worst hit neighborhoods by the fires.

Also, Chubb Insurance failed to approve new policies for valuable properties in fire-risk areas.

Meanwhile, Tokio Marine America Insurance Co. and Trans Pacific Insurance Co. no longer provide policies in California, while Allstate stopped policies.

While these insurance companies chose to halt their policies, Mercury Insurance availed themselves to their former customers.

Many are still counting their losses and pondering the way to go after the wreckage left behind by the tragic Los Angeles fires.

Records from Cal Fire showed that the Palisades Fire had burned almost 24,000 acres as of Sunday, while the Eaton Fire burned over 14,000 acres.

Several celebrities, including Adam Brody, Anthony Hopkins, Miles Teller, Paris Hilton, and Anna Faris, lost their properties to the inferno.

Several celebrities have taken steps to help those in need amid the devastating effects of the Los Angeles Fires.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also stepped out to help wildfire victims. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex helped to distribute food and essential items.

Meanwhile, Kim Kardashian has called for an increase in the pay of incarcerated firefighters amid the California fires.

The SKIMS founder urged Governor Gavin Newsom to consider raising the inmates’ pay as they continually risk their lives and prove to their communities that they have turned new leaves.
