Michael Gerety passes away at 82, claims report

Michael Gerety, a prominent entertainment executive and publicist, passed away on January 13, 2025, at the age of 82. Over the course of his distinguished career, Gerety worked with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, including Julie Andrews, James Garner, and Chuck Norris. His legacy also includes an important role in transforming the way entertainment news was distributed during his time as president of Newslink Corp.

Born on October 30, 1942, in Freeport, Long Island, Gerety began his career in the entertainment industry in 1965 when he joined MGM. His first role was as a regional advertising publicity representative, working in cities like Chicago, Atlanta, and Dallas. He briefly left MGM to work with Durwood Theaters, a company that later became AMC Theaters, before returning to MGM in 1972. He continued to work there through its merger with United Artists. When the company’s theatrical distribution arm dissolved, Gerety moved on to American International Pictures.

Gerety later became president of Newslink Corp. in 1981, where he helped revolutionize the distribution of entertainment news. He also joined Hanson & Schwam Public Relations in the mid-1980s, eventually becoming executive vice president. His clients at the firm included major names from both the entertainment and writing industries.

Gerety is survived by his wife Barbara, children Patrick and Katherine, grandchildren Westley and Faye, and siblings Sheila and David. His death marks the loss of a key figure in Hollywood’s entertainment.
