Born on October 30, 1942, in Freeport, Long Island, Gerety began his career in the entertainment industry in 1965 when he joined MGM. His first role was as a regional advertising publicity representative, working in cities like Chicago, Atlanta, and Dallas. He briefly left MGM to work with Durwood Theaters, a company that later became AMC Theaters, before returning to MGM in 1972. He continued to work there through its merger with United Artists. When the company’s theatrical distribution arm dissolved, Gerety moved on to American International Pictures.
Gerety later became president of Newslink Corp. in 1981, where he helped revolutionize the distribution of entertainment news. He also joined Hanson & Schwam Public Relations in the mid-1980s, eventually becoming executive vice president.
