Cameron Diaz is not looking to put a label on her Hollywood return.
The actress, who just made her onscreen comeback with Netflix’s Back in Action following a 10-year hiatus, recently shared with Empire magazine if this means she’s back for good.
“I don’t know how I view it. It’s hard to say,” she explained. “If I say it then it becomes this thing. I reserve the right to say no to doing a movie ever again, and I reserve the right to say yes if I decide to. I’m not defining anything. I’m just open to whatever makes sense for me and my family at any given moment.”
The Charlie’s Angels star, who appeared in numerous rom-coms in the late ’90s and 2000s, also clarified which film genre she wasn’t necessarily looking to revisit. “No more rom-coms, only mom-coms,” she added.
Diaz is best known for some of her iconic roles in rom-coms such as The Holiday, My Best Friend’s Wedding, The Other Woman, What Happens in Vegas and In Her Shoes. However, her new movie Back in Action is an action-comedy, also starring Jamie Foxx.
The film follows former CIA spies Emily (Diaz) and Matt (Foxx), who are pulled back into espionage after their secret identities are exposed. The movie also served as a reunion for the two actors, who previously starred in 1999’s Any Given Sunday and 2014’s Annie (which was also Daiz’s last onscreen role before her hiatus).
“I thought that if I was going to come back and do a movie, the only person I’d come back and do it with would be this guy,” she said of Foxx. “Seriously. I had other opportunities along the way and I was always saying, ‘No. I’m not doing it, I’ve told you… What? Jamie asked? Jamie? Oh, I can do a movie with Jamie!’”
In the past decade, Diaz welcomed two children, daughter Raddix and son Cardinal, with her husband, Good Charlotte rocker Benji Madden. She also launched clean wine brand Avaline with partner Katherine Power in 2020.
Back in Action drops on Netflix Friday.
