As fans continue to wait for the upcoming Star Wars series centered around Darth Maul, Sam Witwer, who has portrayed the character in both film and television, has come out to explain the timeline of events in Maul: Shadow Lord. The said series will not only serve as a return to the animated world for Star Wars fans, but will also mark Witwer’s first outing as the menacing Sith Lord since 2021’s Lego Star Wars: Terrifying Tales. In the build-up to the animated show, the veteran voice actor has confirmed when its events occur with respect to the already established Star Wars lore.
Sam Witwer says Darth Maul: Shadow Lord is set soon after The Clone Wars
In a recent discussion, the Supergirl actor revealed that the forthcoming Darth Maul: Shadow Lord series will follow a timeline set one year after the Clone Wars.
While talking to Collider’s Maggie Lovitt at the ongoing Star Wars Celebration, Sam Witwer noted, “This is a year after The Clone Wars. You have a situation where everyone got destroyed by the Clones, and Maul’s organization didn’t really hold under that pressure. He still has a group with him, but it’s not like it was, and so it was devastating in that way. Everyone is very afraid. Everyone is very uncertain. But he is watching an empire that he knew was coming, but he wasn’t thinking it was going to be like this. He was in on his master’s plan, but only partially.”
As such, Maul – Shadow Lord should follow a timeline that falls between Episodes 2 and 3, similar to the setup of The Clone Wars show. In addition to his comments regarding the Darth Maul series’ timeframe, Witwer also noted that it will be somewhat “darker” than previous Star Wars projects as the team is “going a little bit further than we’ve gone before.” He added, “It’s a little bit more dangerous in the way that it looks and sounds and feels.”
At the time of writing, Maul – Shadow Lord has yet to receive an official release schedule from its creators.
