Tucker Wetmore just released his first album, but music has always been a huge part of his life.

“Music, in general, is my therapy,” Wetmore, 25, exclusively told Us Weekly while discussing his debut album, What Not To, which dropped Friday, April 25. “I remember when I first started playing music, I was 10 or 11 years old, and that’s why I did it. Because there was a lot of stuff going on in my family, and I was young but I had to grow up really fast, and that’s how I coped with things. I would just sit in front of the piano and bang the keys for hours. I loved it and I learned a lot within myself.”

As he got older, however, the singer-songwriter put music aside to pursue a football career. But after an injury ended his gridiron prospects in college, Wetmore turned back to music — and found his purpose. Now he’s gearing up for a tour with Thomas Rhett and pinching himself about his success.

“I’m in New York right now. I was in London last week. It’s taking me all over the world, and it’s the coolest thing ever,” he told Us. “I never thought it would get to where I’m at, and it seems to be going in the right direction. I’m just blessed, truly.”

Before he headed to Stagecoach, we asked Wetmore to Make Us a Mixtape of his favorite songs. Keep reading to see some of the tracks that have left a lasting impact on his life:

Song That Reminds Him of Childhood

“Higher” by Creed. I feel like every time we got in the truck to go anywhere, it was always either country, radio or rock or metal or something like that. That song just popped in my brain out of the many that we listened to.

Song He Sings in the Car When No One Is Watching

“Wannabe” by Spice Girls. It makes me feel good.

Song That Reminds Him of His Favorite Place

I’m trying to think of my favorite place. Lately, it’s been my bed. Somewhere warm, so probably something reggae. Something by Bob Marley. Let’s go “Jamming” by Bob Marley.

The song that makes me want to get it all hot and heavy is “Let’s Get It On” by Marvin Gaye.

Song He’d Tune Out If It Came On

I might get a lot of hate for this, but I’m not a big Beatles fan, so I’d probably change that. Nothing against them! Not my speed.

“The House That Built Me” by Miranda Lambert. It also reminds me of my childhood. I feel like my mom was always playing that. In my opinion, I think it’s one of the best songs ever written. Not just country, but music-wide, but it makes me sad. I wish I wrote that.

Wetmore’s debut album, What Not To, is out now.
