Ryan Reynolds is working on a new Marvel movie project, but this time, he might be handing off the spotlight. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds is “exploring ideas” for a new MCU movie that would pair Deadpool with several members of the X-Men.

It’s not a traditional team-up flick, and it’s definitely not a Deadpool 4. Instead, this idea leans more X-Men-centric, with Deadpool playing a supporting role.

The report notes that Reynolds “was adamant he wouldn’t be doing a solo Deadpool movie following 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine,” but that doesn’t mean he’s hanging up the red suit entirely.

The plan reportedly centers on a movie that includes “three or four” X-Men characters, while letting Deadpool stir the pot from the sidelines.

This project is said to be not the same as the official MCU X-Men movie that’s currently in the works. That one’s being written by Michael Lesslie and is meant to formally bring the X-Men into the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Reynolds-led idea is a completely separate endeavor, described as being in “extremely early days and far from becoming a reality.” It’s also mentioned that Reynolds is developing this concept independently from Marvel Studios, so don’t expect any announcements anytime soon.

Still, Reynolds and the X-Men go way back. His previous Deadpool films featured a rotating door of mutants, including Colossus (Stefan Kapičić), Cable (Josh Brolin), Domino (Zazie Beetz), and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand).

The Deadpool & Wolverine brought in characters like Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), Gambit (Channing Tatum), X-23 (Dafne Keen), Blade (Wesley Snipes), Electra (Jennifer Garner), and more

Meanwhile, Marvel is already laying the groundwork for mutants across the MCU. Avengers: Doomsday is set to bring back a handful of familiar faces from the original X-Men film trilogy with Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, and Rebecca Romijn as Mystique.

So while we might be a long way off from seeing Reynolds’ mutant mashup hit the screen, the idea alone sparks curiosity. It’ll be interesting to learn more about what he’s got cooking.
