Would you look at that! President Donald Trump has changed his tune on seeking a third term as he admits it’s “not something [he’s] looking to do” and that he’ll be “an 8-year president.” He also suggests that Vice President JD Vance or United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio could potentially be his successor as POTUS.

While Donald Trump has flirted with the idea of running for a third term as president — even telling the media that there are ways he can make the constitutionally impossible possible — he is now appearing to back down.

During an exclusive interview with NBC News’ ‘Meet The Press,’ Trump finally admitted that a third term is something “you’re not allowed to do.” Currently, under the 22nd Amendment of the Constitution, it is prohibited for a president to seek out a third term in the White House.

Donald Trump Won’t Seek Third Term, Highlights JD Vance, Marco Rubio As Potential Successors

In the interview that aired Sunday morning (May 4), Trump told ‘Meet the Press’ moderator Kristen Welker:

“I’ll be an eight-year president, I’ll be a two-term president. I always thought that was very important. It’s something that, to the best of my knowledge, you’re not allowed to do. I don’t know if that’s constitutional that they’re not allowing you to do it or anything else.”

In the new interview, Trump claimed he’s received strong requests from allies to run for a third time. However, he’s planning on following the rules this time around. He later highlighted VP JD Vance and State Secretary Marco Rubio as potential successors as leader of the free world. He also highlighted other rising stars in the Republican Party. Furthermore, the news arrive after a new poll showed Donald Trump had the worst 100-day approval ratings since 1945.

Donald Trump Previously Claimed He’s ‘Not Joking’ About Running For Third Term

As mentioned, in March, Donald Trump previously spoke with NBC News about a third term. During a phone call with moderator Kristen Welker, he said he was “not joking’ about considering a third run for president. He said there are “methods” to secure a third term. Trump told Welker:

“A lot of people want me to do it. But, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go. You know, it’s very early in the administration. I’m focused on the current.”

When asked to clarify his comments, he said, “I’m not joking. But I’m not — it is far too early to think about it.” NBC also asked Trump whether he has been presented with plans to allow him to secure a third term. He said, “There are methods which you could do it.”

NBC then asked if one of the methods included VP JD Vance running for office then passing Trump the position. He replied, “That’s one [method], but there are others too.” However, when asked if he could share another one, Trump simply replied, “No.”
