The 2025 Cannes Film Festival is changing its red carpet rules with a newly updated dress code. The new guidelines have officially banned full nudity and large outfits that affect the guest’s movement or seating.

Read on to learn more details about the updated dress code.

Cannes Film Festival new dress code explained

Ahead of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, organizers have implemented an updated dress code that sets stricter limits on what guests can wear on the red carpet. The new guideline was announced just ahead of the festival’s opening. It officially prohibits full nudity and overly large or “voluminous” outfits, especially those with huge trains.

The updated charter reads: “For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival. Voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater are not permitted.” The statement adds that red carpet access will be denied to anyone who does not comply with the updated rules.

In response to questions, a Cannes press representative confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that these stipulations were recently added to the charter. However, the spokesperson clarified that some rules have already been in place for years. According to the representative, the update is not to regulate fashion but “to prohibit full nudity on the carpet.”

This update arrives amid years of headline-making fashion at Cannes. Hollywood stars like Bella Hadid, Elle Fanning, and Kendall Jenner have turned heads in see-through gowns. In 2022, one attendee staged a topless protest in support of Ukraine. They had to be removed from the red carpet. Most recently, Kanye West’s wife, Bianca Censori, attended the Grammys and posed in a completely transparent dress. However, officials have not stated if a specific event prompted this policy change.

With this year’s festival running from May 13 to May 24, attendees are expected to follow these updated rules.
