Maybe Happy Ending, a touching musical from South Korea about two outdated helper robots finding love, became the clear star of the 78th Tony Awards. The production took home six awards from ten nominations, including Best Musical, Best Leading Actor in a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Book, Best Direction, and Best Scenic Design.Darren Criss, known for Glee, earned his first Tony for playing Oliver. On stage, he thanked his wife Mia, calling her his “hero” for supporting him through eight shows each week.The duo behind the story, Hue Park (lyrics and book) and Will Aronson (music and book), made history as the first Koreans to win Tonys in their categories. Director Michael Arden was honoured as Best Direction. Scenic designers Dane Laffrey and George Reeve won for creating the show’s striking visual world on stage. Hosted by Cynthia Erivo, the ceremony celebrated how Broadway has bounced back after the pandemic, reporting a record-breaking season with $1.9 billion in revenue and 14.7 million tickets sold. Other major winners of the evening included Purpose for Best Play, Sunset Boulevard for Best Revival — with Nicole Scherzinger earning Best Leading Actress — and performances from Cole Escola and Sarah Snook in the play categories.

First staged in Seoul in 2016, Maybe Happy Ending follows two retired robots exploring loneliness, connection, and memories. After premiering in English in Atlanta in 2020, the musical opened on Broadway in October 2024. Critics have praised the production for being an emotional “robot rom-com” that fully captures the human heart.

This Tony sweep builds on South Korea’s cultural momentum. It joins earlier global successes like Parasite at the Oscars, Squid Game at the Emmys, and the continuing influence of K-pop. It shows how Korean stories are resonating powerfully on the global stage.

In his speech, Arden highlighted empathy as a strength. Criss described the musical as “magical, beautiful, heartfelt, humane.” With six wins, Maybe Happy Ending tied for the most awards this season alongside Buena Vista Social Club and Death Becomes Her.

The cast album is now streaming, and a vinyl version is coming out on June 13. With its run of wins and artistic acclaim, Maybe Happy Ending proves that a story about robots in Seoul can touch hearts all over the world—and that great storytelling transcends borders.
