The Devil Wears Prada 2 scribe Aline Brosh McKenna is a-OK with the many eyes on David Frankel’s highly anticipated sequel.
Addressing the viral set photos that have proliferated on the internet, the pic’s original screenwriter spoke with IndieWire amid production about the hubbub around the project, saying it’s “an honor” to have so many viewers keen to see its development.
“People will stand outside just for a glimpse of these actors and these characters that they love because seeing them in wardrobe has really excited people, especially since it’s a fashion movie,” McKenna told the publication. “We knew there would be a lot of interest. I personally hadn’t experienced this level of people coming out [to the set], but it’s the world we live in.”
She continued, “In many ways, we’re speaking to a different world than we did in 2006 … It stems from like a legitimate desire to see these characters again. As long as everyone’s safe, what an honor that people are still interested.”
McKenna added that she could relate to audiences’ excitement: “I got a little squeal when I saw them in costume the first time. I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ It was like my son’s bar mitzvah or something. I felt like I wanted to take pictures!”
Currently filming across New York City, the spread of the images — for both The Devil Wears Prada 2 and other recent productions — has led to online disagreements about the utility of such content, including whether it spoils the eventual moviegoing experience.
First-look images, which came over the weekend, showed Manhattan abuzz with anticipation as fans sought glimpses of the return to their beloved high-stakes fashion world. Returning principal cast Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt were all spot gallivanting around famed city haunts, including the Met, which transformed its exterior to host a Gala-esque fete appearing in the sequel.
New faces joining the 2026 movie include Simone Ashley, Pauline Chalamet, Helen J. Shen, Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux, B.J. Novak, Rachel Bloom, Patrick Brammall and Kenneth Branagh, who will portray husband to Streep’s Anna Wintour-inspired Miranda Priestly.
The original film, based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel of the same name and praised for its cutting satire, centered on Andy Sachs (Hathaway), a journalism graduate who lands the job “a million girls would kill for” as junior assistant to the esteemed editor-in-chief of a haute couture magazine. The sequel, which will hit theaters May 1, is expected to trace Miranda’s perspective as she battles the decline of the print industry.
