Colin Farrell is giving fans a little taste of what to expect from The Batman: Part II, and it sounds like things are about to get a lot darker in Gotham. While his character, the Penguin, won’t be in the spotlight this time, Farrell promises the sequel raises the bar in a big way.

Farrell told The Hollywood Reporter:

“I’ve got an even smaller role in this one. But I’m OK with that. I’ve read the script, from start to finish, and I can’t say much about it. But it’s deeper, scarier, the stakes are bigger. I’m really excited to see it.”

Farrell will reprise his role as Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot, the mob boss who clawed his way up Gotham’s criminal underworld in Matt Reeves’ first film. Since then, he’s taken center stage in HBO’s The Penguin series, fleshing out Oz’s story in gritty detail before stepping back for the big-screen sequel.

In The Batman: Part II, Farrell joins Robert Pattinson returning as Bruce Wayne and Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Jim Gordon. While plot details are being kept tightly under wraps, Farrell’s comments suggest fans should brace for a darker, more intense chapter in Reeves’ grounded Gotham saga.

With The Penguin already showing just how ruthless and calculating Oz can be, it’s going to be interesting to see how his smaller role fits into a story that Farrell says is “deeper” and “scarier.”

If the first movie pushed Batman into a grim detective story, the sequel may be taking him into even more terrifying territory.
