Former Late Show host Stephen Colbert is officially joining the Star Trek universe in the upcoming Starfleet Academy series. Set in the 32nd century, the 12th Star Trek series is scheduled to make its debut in 2026, with the renowned comedian and writer also set to play a part after the unceremonious cancellation of his CBS talk show.

Stephen Colbert to play the Digital Dean of Students in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

During a virtual appearance at Saturday’s Star Trek universe panel at the New York Comic Con, Stephen Colbert confirmed that he’ll be voicing the Digital Dean of Students in the much-awaited Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series. (via Deadline)

“Folks, I’m sorry I couldn’t be with you in person today, but I’m a perfectionist, and I just didn’t have enough bunting for my Mugato cosplay,” the fan-favorite television personality said of his physical absence from the event. He then revealed, “However, nothing could stop me from sharing this exciting news; I’m honored to announce that my beautiful voice will be joining Star Trek: Starfleet Academy as the Digital Dean of Students.”

Colbert also entertained Star Trek fans by briefly reciting one of his lines from the show before expressing his excitement about joining the beloved sci-fi franchise. “I’m thrilled to join this universe that I’ve loved for so long, and unlike my on-camera castmates, I’m thrilled to join it without having to spend four hours in hair and makeup every day. I’ll see you when Starfleet Academy premieres. Until then, enjoy the Con. Live long… and do your thing,” he noted.

In addition to confirming Colbert’s part, the Saturday event also announced the official release date for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, along with the series’ first trailer. The latest project in the long-running franchise is all set to premiere its first two episodes on Paramount+ on January 15, 2026. Meanwhile, the remaining episodes will follow a weekly release pattern on Thursdays, concluding the season’s run on March 12.
