This week’s retro trailer fis for the wild 1984 sci-fi musical comedy, Voyage of the Rock Aliens, which follows a group of extraterrestrials who travel to Earth after picking up strange musical transmissions from a small American town kwons as “Speelburgh”.
Their charmingly oddball leader, Absid, becomes fascinated with human culture, especially rock music, and decides to investigate. When the aliens land, their arrival throws the town’s already chaotic teen drama into even more mayhem, particularly as local aspiring rock singer Dee Dee finds herself caught between her jealous tough-guy boyfriend Frankie and the mysterious new visitors.
As the aliens attempt to blend in, they spark a series of surreal musical numbers, beach-movie-style showdowns, and over-the-top sci-fi antics.
Dee Dee’s determination to pursue her dream of stardom clashes with Frankie’s need to stay in control, while Absid’s curiosity about Earth life pulls the aliens deeper into human emotions and rivalries.
The result is a colorful, campy collision of genres, part parody, part earnest musical, that revels in its own playful strangeness.
