As anticipation builds for the release of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, director Emma Tammi is addressing the difference between the response by critics and audiences. Speaking ahead of the sequel, Tammi noted that the creative team remains focused on meeting fan expectations.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’s Emma Tammi on divide between fans and critics

Emma Tammi says she is not concerned about whether Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 faces the same gap between critical reviews and audience reactions that occurred with the first film. The director maintains that the franchise has always been built with its core audience in mind.

Speaking ahead of the sequel’s release, the filmmaker noted that the original movie drew widespread enthusiasm from fans. However, the same was not true for most critics. She said, “The reviews come out, and it takes a beat longer for all the audience reactions to start trickling in. So I think when the audience scores started coming in so high, we were like, ‘Oof, we did it.’” (via Dexerto)

Tammi added, “This was who this movie was for. If it’s connecting with them, if they’re getting it, then we did a good job, and we did what we set out to do.” The filmmaker emphasized that although she read many of the critical reviews and understood their viewpoints, the project was not designed with that audience in mind. She said, “I think, at the core, this movie wasn’t for the critics. I think you’ve just got to be able to let it go.”

Looking ahead, Tammi does not anticipate a major shift in the overall critical consensus for the sequel. She added, “If it does, great, that’ll be gravy. But again, that’s not who this is for, and I think we’re very clear on who we wanted this movie to land with.” She expressed hope that audiences who supported the original will return, suggesting that the follow-up may appeal to them even more.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 arrives in theaters on December 5, 2025.
