First Lady Melania Trump has gone viral as social media reacts to her reading about Santa Claus at the Children’s National Hospital years after an audio leak heard her angrily ranting and asking, “Who gives a f**k about Christmas?”

On Friday (December 5), the First Lady visited a children’s hospital and wished the patients strength and lots of toys from Santa Claus. Her appearance marked the continuation of a decades-old tradition for first ladies. The traditional holiday hospital visit first started with Bess Truman, who was First Lady from 1945 to 1953.
As the First Lady entered Washington, D.C.’s Children’s National Hospital, two patients, a 5-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy, met with her. They then escorted her to a festively-decorated atrium, where she sat in a big red chair in front of a tall Christmas tree.
In front of about two dozen child patients and other audience members, she read, “How Does Santa Go Down the Chimney?” by Mac Barnett. While wrapping up the reading Trump wished the children strength and “lots of toys.” She said:
“I’m sure Santa will visit all of you this Christmas and bring you a lot of toys, so I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I wish you a lot of strength and love.”
The First Lady also said that her husband, President Donald Trump “is sending love and best wishes as well.” Before leaving the hospital, the First Lady made her rounds, privately visiting with patients in the hospital’s hematology and oncology wing. She brought along gifts for the patients, while joining the Santa Claus at the hospital.

Now, aside from the First Lady going viral for making a public appearance in general, social media couldn’t help but poke fun and make immigration/deportation comments about the Slovenia native reading in English skills. Social users highlighted her Slavonic accent as she attempted to read a Christmas book to the hospitalized children.
Meanwhile, other social users highlighted the ironic fact that the First Lady was appearing festive about Christmas after once ranting about the holiday and angrily asking, “Who gives a f**k about Christmas?” The comment arrived in October 2020 after audio leaked from a conversation from the Summer of 2018.
Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, a former friend and Senior Adviser to the First Lady, secretly recorded her. Wolkoff later wrote a book about their relationship titled, ‘Melania and Me‘. On the secretly-recorded call, the First Lady expressed her frustration after criticism over her husband’s policy of separating families who illegally crossed the southern border while also needing to perform traditional First Lady duties, like preparing for Christmas. She said:
“They say I’m complicit. I’m the same like him, I support him. I don’t say enough I don’t do enough where I am. I’m working … my a** off on the Christmas stuff, that you know, who gives a f**k about the Christmas stuff and decorations? But I need to do it, right? OK, and then I do it and I say that I’m working on Christmas and planning for the Christmas and they said, ‘Oh, what about the children that they were separated?’ Give me a f**king break. Where they were saying anything when [Barack] Obama did that? I cannot go, I was trying get the kid reunited with the mom. I didn’t have a chance – needs to go through the process and through the law.”
