The Golden Globes are one of the few nights in Hollywood where nothing feels strange — and everything does at the same time. Where it’s perfectly normal to see Steve Martin walking side by side with Kylie Jenner, no one blinking. Where Sean Penn lit up a cigarette in the middle of the ballroom. And where Leonardo DiCaprio continues to prove his ability to inspire a meme in real time remains entirely unmatched.

From the couches at home, the show feels polished and precise — reaction shots, acceptance speeches, carefully timed laughs. But inside the Beverly Hilton, the real story unfolds in the margins: at a side bar just out of camera range, during commercial breaks and in fleeting conversations that never make it on air.

Here are some of the moments you didn’t see on TV — the ones that made this year’s Golden Globes feel especially alive.

Nikki Glaser owned the room — again

Glaser returned to host the Globes, and it quickly became clear why they reportedly locked her into a three-year deal. For viewers at home, the monologue was a confident mix of roasting and toasting — with jokes aimed at stars like DiCaprio, Penn and Kevin Hart. But inside the room, the response felt even bigger.

This is a crowd that can often take itself a little too seriously. Not this time. Glaser had the entire ballroom laughing, and throughout the night, you could hear table-to-table chatter about how she had absolutely “killed it.”

The biggest applause break of the evening came when Glaser turned her attention to the network airing the show, joking about CBS’s recent news shake-ups — a pointed reference to the newly installed editor in chief who reportedly shut down a 60 Minutes segment. Her line about “best editing” landed loudly in the room, precisely because everyone knew what she was really talking about.

Another moment that hit hard: her jab at the heavily redacted Epstein files, with Glaser quipping that the real winners for “best editing” might be coming from the Justice Department. The joke drew huge laughter — and was a reminder that she wasn’t afraid to flirt with the edge, even in one of Hollywood’s most elite settings.

Golden Globes executive producer and showrunner Glenn Weiss told me before the show that there was some pressure to follow what many considered a perfect monologue last year. But, he said, Glaser never approached the moment like a victory lap.

Instead, Weiss emphasized how intensely she worked the material in the weeks leading up to the show — constantly taking jokes out onstage, refining them and pushing herself to find something sharper. “She’s always looking for that better joke,” he said, noting that while Glaser has built her reputation on roast comedy, she understands how to tailor that instinct to a room like the Globes. “She brought a really great, funny comedy that wasn’t necessarily biting at everybody.”

The bar was high. Glaser didn’t just clear it — she reset it.

Sean Penn DGAF

Glaser told me earlier in the week she had fully prepared herself for Penn not to care for her jokes. Instead, he did the opposite, cracking up at her line comparing his refusal to chase youth in Hollywood to “slowly morphing into a sexy leather handbag.”

He laughed, leaned into it and then proceeded to spend the rest of the night behaving like someone who had absolutely nothing to prove. His vibe? Carefree. His costar (and Golden Globe winner) Teyana Taylor especially seemed to amuse him throughout the night, as they were seen laughing together a lot.

That energy carried well beyond the monologue. At one point during the ceremony, a noticeable smell of smoke drifted through the front of the room. A quick check of X confirmed it wasn’t just a phantom whiff: Penn had lit up inside the venue as DiCaprio, his One Battle After Another costar, and Kate Hudson caught up.

And then there was the look. While not officially confirmed, I was told by someone in the know that Penn may have gotten himself ready — hair and all — without much outside help. No glam squad fuss, no visible concern. Honestly? It tracks.

In a night full of polish, Penn stood out by doing the least — and somehow pulling it off.

Forget the stage — the Golden Globes side bar was the real party

What viewers don’t see at home is the bar tucked just out of camera view — the unofficial gathering spot where celebrities drift throughout the night to actually talk, laugh and let their guard down. Mixed drinks are flowing, coffee and tea are on hand and there’s a huge sushi bar courtesy of Nobu.

At one point, Emma Stone, Jennifer Lawrence and Zoë Kravitz met there, catching up away from prying eyes. The vibe was relaxed and animated — less awards-season pressure, more old-friends energy — and they clearly seemed to be having a great time.

After his win, Seth Rogen made a beeline to the area and ordered a martini. Moments later, his unmistakable laugh cut through the noise — exactly as delightful in person as you’d imagine. When I turned to see who had made Rogen break, the answer was Glen Powell. The two chatted for a while, trading laughs like old pals. Call it wishful thinking, but it certainly felt like the kind of conversation that sparks future collaborations.

Powell also caught up with Amanda Seyfried, who held court at the off-camera spot, surrounded by famous friends like Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons. She seemed fully in her element.

Is DiCaprio the new Taylor Swift?

With Swift absent from the awards season circuit this year, there was a noticeable energy shift in the room. Swift’s enthusiastic, camera-ready reactions have become a staple at shows like the Golden Globes — and this year, someone else seemed more than happy to pick up the slack.

Enter Leo.

DiCaprio was first on his feet for nearly every winner, clapping enthusiastically and radiating full cheerleader energy from his table. The reaction shots added up quickly — and by the end of the night, it felt less like a coincidence and more like a pattern.

You may have already seen the clip making the rounds online: DiCaprio pointing animatedly across his table, clearly mid–heated (or at least very passionate) conversation, mouthing something emphatically to another celebrity. I can’t confirm exactly who was on the receiving end — but if I were making a short list of suspects, Julia Roberts would be near the top.

During one commercial break, the two made a point to connect, leaning in close and chatting animatedly, clearly having a blast. Whatever the topic was, it was lively enough to suggest this wasn’t just a quick hello — more like a genuine catch-up moment unfolding in real time.

Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner’s date night said everything

If there were still any questions about Chalamet and Jenner, their Golden Globes date night answered them — decisively.

The two were openly affectionate throughout the evening, with plenty of PDA at their table: kissing, back caresses and the kind of easy physical closeness that reads less “new couple” and more very real. Sorry to those hoping the two were secretly in a fight, but I saw none of that.

Chalamet was typically surrounded by fellow A-listers offering congratulations, and despite some online discourse suggesting otherwise, Jenner was far from ignored. Stars came up to greet both of them, including Ariana Grande, Elle Fanning and Jennifer Lawrence.

Whatever theories are floating around on social media, that wasn’t the energy in the room. Jenner looked entirely comfortable — and entirely welcome — and Golden Globe voters clearly didn’t care who Chalamet’s plus-one was either, as he took home best actor for Marty Supreme.

A ‘Golden’ night indeed

It was one of the songs of the summer — OK, the year — and it was nice to see the voices behind Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters get their flowers.

Before taking home best original song for “Golden,” singer-songwriter EJAE was spotted with her phone’s flashlight retracing her steps for what appeared to be a missing piece of jewelry.

Awards season glamour meets very real life. Here’s hoping whatever she was looking for turned up — especially on a night that ended with a win.

A Disney reunion, caught just in time

Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus had one of the sweetest unscripted moments of the night. The two were visibly thrilled to spot each other, immediately embracing and catching up — laughing, leaning in and fully in their own world — before a nearby camera finally caught the reunion.

A nostalgic full-circle moment, just before it became a viral one.

Ariana Grande was all good vibes — and very excited about Nobu

No sore loser energy here. Despite missing out on best supporting actress early in the night, Grande was enjoying herself throughout the show.

She was especially animated while chatting with Teyana Taylor during a commercial break — leaning in, laughing and clearly deep in conversation. Whatever they were talking about looked fun enough to make anyone wish they were sitting a little closer.

Grande was also up and about throughout the evening, stopping to say hello to Chalamet and Jenner. But the person she seemed most excited to see? Nobu Matsuhisa.

When the evening’s chef made his way through the ballroom, Grande literally jumped out of her seat to greet the famed sushi master — proof that, trophies aside, she was very much winning the night in her own way.

The new guys in the room

There was no missing the anticipation around the stars of Heated Rivalry. Even on the red carpet, people were openly wondering when Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie would arrive. Inside the ballroom, though, the dynamic was more split-screen.

About half the room was fully locked in, eager for a glimpse, a photo, a moment. The other half? Clearly still had some binge-watching to do. When Williams and Storrie took the stage to present an award, a few whispers of “Who are they?” floated through nearby tables.

Still, any uncertainty faded quickly. The two were welcomed warmly, held their own under the lights and radiated unmistakable heartthrob energy — the kind that suggests they won’t be “the new guys” for long.
