Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender have another exciting reason to head to their local comic shop this spring. A brand-new comic book series set in the beloved Avatar universe is on the way, and it puts the spotlight on one of the franchise’s most popular groups.

Dark Horse Comics is launching a new three-issue miniseries titled Avatar: The Last Airbender — Kyoshi Warriors, developed in collaboration with Avatar Studios and original series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.

The series expands the animated world in a meaningful way while keeping its focus on character, honor, and the cost of war.

This new story follows Suki and her fellow Kyoshi Warriors as they leave the safety of Kyoshi Island to take part in the larger conflict against the Fire Nation.

Once on the mainland, they quickly learn that earning respect isn’t easy, even when your reputation precedes you. According to the official description for Avatar: The Last Airbender — Kyoshi Warriors:

“Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors leave their island home to join the war against the Fire Nation. Met with suspicion and resentment by the mainlanders, they struggle to prove their worth to the Earth Kingdom. But when that opportunity arises, will they be willing to compromise their values as Kyoshi Warriors to embrace it?”

The story is written by Brandon Hoáng, with art by BellBessa and Xanthe Bouma. Colors are handled by Adele Matera, and lettering comes from Comicraft’s Jimmy Betancourt. Together, they’re telling a focused, character-driven story that digs into who the Kyoshi Warriors are when they’re pushed outside their comfort zone.

Readers can also get a first look at the series through its cover art. Danielle Weires, who illustrates all three covers, provides the main cover for issue one, offering a strong visual introduction to the tone and scale of the story.

The first issue of Avatar: The Last Airbender — Kyoshi Warriors arrives in comic book stores on May 6 and is already available for preorder. Each issue runs 22 pages and is priced at $4.99.

This release continues Dark Horse Comics’ long-running partnership with the Avatar franchise, which has produced multiple successful comics and graphic novels over the years.

For longtime fans and newcomers alike, Kyoshi Warriors sounds like a cool new chapter that honors what makes Avatar special while giving some well-deserved focus to Suki and her legendary fighters.
