ESPN is expanding its slate of documentaries with a new six-part docuseries focused on college football icon Nick Saban. Co-created with Words + Pictures, the project will chronicle Saban’s decades-long coaching career, including his historic 17-season tenure at the University of Alabama.
ESPN and Words + Pictures to produce six-part docuseries on Nick Saban
ESPN is developing a six-part documentary series centered on the life and career of legendary college football coach Nick Saban, in collaboration with production company Words + Pictures. Titled Saban, the project will trace Saban’s rise to prominence and his impact on the sport. It will particularly focus on his 17-season run at the University of Alabama, where he led the Crimson Tide to six national championships.
According to the official description, the docuseries will offer a comprehensive account of Saban’s career. Saban said the decision to participate came after stepping away from the sidelines and reflecting on his career with his wife. The football legend said, “With my coaching days behind me, Ms. Terry and I have been doing a lot of reflection and realized we were ready to tell our story (via Variety).”
He added that the project encouraged him to look back “not just at my time at Alabama, but every stop along the way.” The docuseries will feature interviews with former players, coaches, and colleagues who worked closely with Saban across different programs. Saban said, “I’m happy to see that so many of them have contributed to this docuseries. There’s a lot to tell, and I’m excited to share it all.”
Russell Dinallo will direct the project. Connor Schell, Libby Geist, Aaron Cohen, Alexa Conway, and Tom Rinaldi are producing for Words + Pictures. Meanwhile, Gabe Honig will serve as showrunner and co-executive producer.
As of now, details such as premiere date and release schedule has not yet been announced.
