Robert Redford’s Daughter Reminisces Growing Up With Late Dad

The late director’s daughter relished stunning memories from his childhood around the actor and how her father trained her and her siblings on how to make their impact in the world.

Robert Redford passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at his home in Sundance, in the mountains of Utah, surrounded by the love and affection of his family.

In Amy’s interview with TODAY, she described her father as “playful and curious and kind,” who taught them to do and find what they are most passionate about and the things they think might be able to change the world.

The actress shared that he raised them with the idea that family is everything, and they remained central to his values. She recalled shuffling between the mountains of Sundance and New York City as a child, exposing them to the benefit of living between “the city and in natural law.”

Amy noted that her father taught them the “strong value of stewardship,” which is something that all the kids bring to the table to this day. She also spoke about the role he played in the creation of the Sundance Film Festival and how he used his instincts to create a safe space for independent filmmakers.

The actress concluded to Laura Jarrett and Peter Alexander of TODAY that her father saw an opportunity with the Sundance Film Festival and took full advantage of the situation.

Robert died in the comfort of his Utah home, an occurrence which did not seem strange to sources close to him who established that he preferred life in Utah over the glitz and glam of Hollywood. Even before his death, the director informed his loved ones that he preferred to be buried away from the pomp and glitz of Hollywood.

The Blast explained that the director’s fame was, however, a direct contrast to his quiet lifestyle, because he rose to become one of the biggest Hollywood stars with blockbusters like “The Sting,” “Butch Cassidy,” and “The Way We Were” under his credits.

Aside from acting, he also directed movies and clinched award titles while at it, including an Academy Award in 1980 for directing “Ordinary People” and many more movie projects.

The director, unfortunately, had some terrible experiences before he passed on, including witnessing the loss of his two sons. Sources close to his old home had revealed that he found it hard to cope after the death of his two children, especially his third eldest son, James Redford.

A local from where he previously lived shared that his vibrant personality literally disappeared with his personal loss, and the emotional toll was very evident. Robert’s third eldest son passed away from bile duct cancer in his liver in 2020.

The death became the second blow Robert had to deal with, although the first incident was years ago in 1959, when he and his ex-wife lost their first son to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome two and a half months after his birth.

When the star passed away last September, it sent waves across Hollywood, mostly within his close circle of friends and loved ones. The Blast shared that one of them was Howard, who honored him with a touching post on Instagram, almost in tears.

The actress confessed that Redford’s death was a huge personal loss to her because of the bond they shared as on-screen father and daughter. She recalled her first time meeting the actor and how they exchanged very warm pleasantries when she ran into his arms.

Since that first encounter, the duo has shared hundreds of embraces and a very cordial relationship. According to her, Robert will always remain “Bob” to her, a moniker used by his close friends and family.

Howard reflected on the times they spent in the woods of New Zealand, listening to the actor’s story about his childhood and his unending love for nature.

The actor’s death was announced by Cindi Berger, who is the chairman and CEO of Rogers & Cowan PMK, who emphasized that he died at his home in Utah, where he loved. Robert was born in Santa Monica, California, and briefly lived in Tiburon, after which he found his forever home in Utah.

Subsequently, the star purchased two acres of land in Provo Canyon in 1961, and his love for Utah reached its peak in 1969 when he stopped investors from erecting a string of condominiums at a famous ski resort.

The actor countered the situation by buying out the Timp Haven ski resort in the Wasatch Mountains and renaming it the Sundance Mountain Resort, after his character in the movie “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. He eventually sold the property to Broadreach Capital Partners and Cedar Capital Partners in 2020.
