Invincible Season 4 is having some fun, and this time the joke lands squarely on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The latest episode sneaks in a clever dig at one of the MCU’s most recognizable quirks, those instantly disappearing helmets that somehow solve every conversation problem mid-battle.

Spoilers ahead for Invincible Season 4, Episode 4.

Right in the middle of Mark Grayson’s show-exclusive trip to the Under-Realm, things take a weirdly funny turn. As Mark dives into a pit with Damien Darkblood, voiced by Clancy Brown, the mission is serious, they’re hunting Volcania, but the conversation quickly veers into something much more relatable for superhero fans.

With nothing but time on the way down, Mark starts questioning Darkblood’s helmet situation. The demon casually drops a line that sparks the whole exchange:

“[I] speak more clearly without [a] helmet,” Darkblood says after being quizzed by Mark.

Mark, clearly not buying it, fires back with a question that feels like it’s aimed at a much bigger franchise:

“Do you think I can’t hear you when you’re wearing a helmet?” Mark replies. “It looks pretty complicated. Why not add a microphone or something?”

What follows is a pretty great back-and-forth about how the helmet looks versus how practical it is. Darkblood shrugs it off with style points:

“Looks cool.”

But Mark isn’t done, throwing out the possibility that maybe “demon nanites” are involved.

If that sounds familiar, it should. The moment plays like a wink straight at characters like Iron Man and Black Panther, and the MCU’s long-running habit of using nanotech helmets that magically appear and disappear whenever a character needs to emote or deliver dialogue. It’s become such a staple that it almost goes unnoticed, which is exactly why this joke lands so well.

Invincible, created by Robert Kirkman, has never really played by the same rules as its superhero peers, and it clearly enjoys poking at them. This isn’t even the first time the series has riffed on Marvel.

Season 2 already had its own spin on a crossover that fans thought would bring Spider-Man into the mix. Instead, the show introduced Agent Spider, voiced by Josh Keaton, alongside a parody villain named Prof Ock. It scratched that crossover itch while still doing its own thing.

The Under-Realm storyline itself is also new territory. Fans of the comic might not have seen this coming, but Kirkman has been open about pulling from ideas he didn’t get to explore before:

“There’s a storyline from the comic that I never got around to doing. Every superhero story has some chapter where they go to hell and they fight the devil. It happens in DC and Marvel comics. It’s a big deal,”

He’s also hinted that not everything introduced here will be wrapped up neatly, leaving room for future seasons to circle back: “Dangling threads. that could potentially be picked up on in future seasons.”

That mix of fresh material and self-aware humor is exactly why Invincible keeps standing out. It delivers brutal action and character drama, but it also knows when to step back and laugh at the genre, especially when it comes to things fans have been side-eyeing for years.
