The cyberpunk legend is coming back in a big way. Fans of Ghost in the Shell finally have a date to lock in, and it isn’t far off. The new anime series is set to premiere on July 7, bringing a fresh take on the iconic sci-fi world with high-energy action and a modern edge that still respects what made the franchise a classic.
A new trailer gives a glimpse of what’s ahead, and it leans hard into the series’ signature blend of philosophy, technology, and explosive combat. It’s looks pretty awesome!
The footage teases intense sequences and a sleek visual style, while setting the tone for what’s being described as a “new era of cyberpunk action.” It definitely feels like the franchise is leveling up while staying true to its roots.
The trailer narration sets the stage with a familiar but chilling vision of the future: “In near-future Japan, where the world has become highly information-intensive, with a vast corporate network covering the planet, electrons and light pulsing through it, but the nation-state and ethnic groups still survive… The offensive unit led by the full-body cyborg Motoko Kusanagi.”
Animation duties are handled by Science Saru, the studio behind projects like Dandadan, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, and Star Wars: Visions. The studio has a track record for dynamic animation and unique storytelling, which could be exactly what Ghost in the Shell needs to stand out again in today’s crowded anime landscape.
Ghost in the Shell began as a manga in 1989 and has since grown into one of the most influential sci-fi properties out there. The 1995 anime film is still widely regarded as a landmark in animation, while the 2017 live-action adaptation starring Scarlett Johansson sparked a more divided response. Even so, the series has never really faded from relevance.
The story is set in the mid-21st century in the fictional city of Niihama, where cybernetic enhancements and digital networks are part of everyday life.
At the center is Section 9, a counter-terrorism unit dealing with cybercrime and complex threats. One of the most compelling elements of the franchise has always been the hunt for the Puppet Master, a mysterious hacker that challenges Kusanagi on both a physical and philosophical level.
With its mix of legacy and fresh creative energy, this new chapter of Ghost in the Shell has a real shot at pulling in both hardcore fans and newcomers.
The series will stream on Prime Video when it premieres this summer.
