As the Michael Jackson biopic Michael continues fueling renewed conversation around the King of Pop’s legacy, Netflix is preparing to revisit one of the most controversial chapters of his life.
The streamer has announced Michael Jackson: The Verdict, a new three-part docuseries premiering June 3 that centers on Jackson’s highly publicized 2005 criminal trial, where the singer faced charges of child molestation and other allegations involving a teenage boy. Jackson vehemently denied the claims and was ultimately acquitted on all counts.
According to Netflix’s Tudum, the series will feature interviews with jurors, reporters, attorneys, witnesses and other individuals directly connected to the trial, aiming to reconstruct what unfolded inside the courtroom at a time when cameras were banned from the proceedings.
“The aim was to take the audience inside the proceedings and only speak to eyewitnesses who played a part in those events,” the filmmakers say. “Anyone interested in the Michael Jackson story should feel this documentary gives them a window into what was largely a closed event and a chance to feel closer to what happened.”
Directed by Nick Green and executive produced by Fiona Stourton, the docuseries arrives as Jackson has once again become a dominant figure in pop culture conversation thanks to the release of Michael, which has introduced a new generation to both his music and the controversies that followed him throughout his career.
