A man was recently convicted and sentenced to two months in jail for indecent behavior after randomly hugging people on the street to spread peace and positivity reportedly.

Mohamed Ramzi, a content creator from Algeria, faced controversy last summer after uploading a TikTok video after being inspired by a famous European vlogger who performed social experiments. Ramzi recorded his encounters with strangers when he would randomly approach them and give hugs, but his content spurred outrage from the public. Although he issued an apology, Ramzi was arrested and charged with indecent behavior, but the charges were initially dropped after a court found him not guilty. However, prosecutors appealed the decision after, and the Algerian Judicial Council reviewed the case, which found him guilty, as reported by Oddity Central.

In addition to his indecent behavior charge, prosecutors also charged Ramzi with a “display of indecency” for another video featuring two women wearing short skirts, one of whom had a tattoo. The court sentenced him to serve two months in jail and pay a fine of 5 million dinars($37,0000).

Ramzi issued another apology and stated that he intended to spread peace and love through his content. However, it didn’t sit well with judges and the public.

Algeria, a predominately Muslim country, leans towards conservative social norms. Public displays of affection between unmarried couples are generally frowned upon. Although there isn’t a strict dress code, revealing attire can be seen as indecent, especially for women. The constitution guarantees free speech, but online activities are often monitored, particularly on platforms like Facebook. While there are no outright bans, a 2020 law requires permits for online news publication, blurring the lines between journalism and social media content.
