From Elvis Presley and Bob Marley to Amy Winehouse and Elton John, big-budget biopics about high-profile musicians have been a major trend in theaters lately. Joining the pack this fall is Pharrell Williams, the iconic founder of N.E.R.D. and The Neptunes, who has shared the trailer for his upcoming biopic, Piece by Piece.
The hip-hop and fashion luminary, however, is taking a different approach than those behind the gritty, intimate filmmaking of his contemporaries. Williams chose to have his story told entirely through LEGO animation for Piece by Piece.
The Lego Group has now released the film’s official trailer, in which Williams opens up about his decision to showcase his career in plastic brick form, much to director Morgan Neville’s surprise. The trailer provides a LEGO-fied glimpse into his childhood, first recording sessions and collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani, Timbaland, Jay-Z and more.
As all electronic music fans are wondering, no, the LEGO version of Daft Punk does not appear in the trailer. However, there’s still hope to see the legendary French duo in Piece by Piece considering their Grammy-winning collaboration with Williams, “Get Lucky,” is featured.
