In the report, Grayson stated, “As I approached the cabinet, Sonya stood up from a crouched position, grabbed a pot, raised it above her head, and threw the boiling substance at me. I was in imminent fear of being hit with boiling liquid, which could have caused great bodily harm or death. I fired my duty weapon in Sonya’s direction and observed her fall to the ground behind the counter. I interpreted this to mean she was going to kill me,” Grayson wrote.
As previously reported, on July 6, Grayson responded to a report of a suspected prowler at Massey’s home. Bodycam footage from another deputy captured Massey rebuking Grayson, who then threatened her. The encounter culminated in Grayson shooting Massey in the head and failing to provide her with aid.

Grayson faces charges of first-degree murder, aggravated battery, and official misconduct in the death of the 36-year-old Springfield woman. He pleaded not guilty in Sangamon County Court on July 18 and remains in custody. Following the incident, he was terminated from the sheriff’s office.
Massey’s family has retained renowned attorney Ben Crump to represent them. Crump previously stated, “This is the worst police shooting video that I’ve seen. It is so senseless. [Massey] needed a helping hand. She did not need a bullet to the face.”
