The word is a commonly used adjective derived from the noun ‘Boss,’ and is used to describe someone with a domineering attitude. It most likely originated in the 1540s and had the meaning “swelling, projecting and rounded, decorated with bosses.” However, the word reached its present meaning some time in 1882. Additionally, it is a noun for a cow or calf.
