While students gathered to celebrate Tuskegee University’s 100th Homecoming this weekend, gunfire erupted leaving one dead and several injured in the shooting incident.

Early Sunday morning (November 10), a shooting broke out on the last day of homecoming week at Alabama’s Tuskegee University. According to university officials, one person was killed and several others were left injured from the gunfire.
Officials report that the one person who was killed in the gunfire was not a student at Tuskegee University. Furthermore, this person has not yet been named. It is not clear who opened gunfire first or what led up to the shooting and no arrests have been made at the time of publishing this article.

Tuskegee University officials released an official statement that wholly read, “Tuskegee University confirms that a shooting occurred on campus early Sunday morning, Nov. 10, resulting in the death of a non-university individual. The parents of this individual have been notified. Several others including Tuskegee University students were injured and are receiving treatment at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery.”
The statement continued, “Emergency responders, along with campus and local law enforcement, have secured the scene. The Alabama Bureau of Investigations is conducting an active investigation. The university is in the process of completing student accountability and notifying parents. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.”

As mentioned, Tuskegee University students and supporters gathered at the school on Saturday evening to celebrate the university’s 100th homecoming week. Several videos have since hit social media showing moments during the shooting and in the aftermath.
On Sunday morning, Mark Brown, president and CEO of Tuskegee University, addressed the incident at the university’s Homecoming Convocation. Brown said, “I now ask that you would join me in a brief moment of silence as we reflect on the lost soul and the parents, family members, and friends that grieve, the concerns of all those parents who have children here, for the safety of their students and our students and faculty who may also grieve at this moment.”

This incident follows a series of shootings at homecoming events across the nation within the last month. According to CNN, there was a shooting at Albany State University after their homecoming game on October 19. The incident left one dead and multiple others injured.
The incident at Albany State also occurred the same day that three people were killed and eight others injured during a shooting at another homecoming event outside Lexington, Mississippi. CNN also reported on an October 12 shooting near Tennessee State University in Nashville. The shooting incident following the school’s homecoming celebration left one man dead and nine other people injured.
