The hit video game Helldivers 2 is getting the feature film treatment! Sony Pictures announced the project during their CES 2025 press conference.
I’ve spent a good amount of time playing this game and it’s been a blast! This could seriously make for a wild sci-fi action movie! The game is clearly inspired by the cult classic sci-fi film Starship Troopers, and it will be interesting to see how they translate this game for the big screen.
Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, said: “Looking ahead as to what might come next, I’m excited to announce we are working with Sony Pictures on developing a film adaptation of our amazingly popular PlayStation game Helldivers 2.”
The game was developed by Arrowhead and it follows a group of soldiers in the future who fight to defend democracy against a fascist regime formed by alien robots called Automatons and bugs called Terminids.
The third-person shooter allows players to join the Helldivers and they fight to turn the tide of an intergalactic war by completing major missions.
Helldivers 2 was released in February 2024 and was a massive success, becoming the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game of all time with a staggering 12 million copies sold in just 12 weeks.
The film project is a collaboration between Sony Productions and Sony Pictures. Details about the cast and the plot have not been shared.
