There have been mixed responses to the announcement that Disney is making a Toy Story 5, as fans were reluctant to accept the fourth film. But I feel like despite the groans, it’s happening, and every single Toy Story movie has been pretty great in its own right, so we should just let it happen and enjoy it.

While the third film was like a goodbye, and the end of an era for the toys, the fourth film was an adventure where we got to see two friends take one more journey together. And in reality, most toys do live on and on, so it makes sense that we’d be able to watch it happen.

The creators of this new film have not given us an idea of its premise, but franchise actor Tim Allen, who voices Buzz Lightyear, has given us a small bit of info to think on.

While promoting his comedy tour, the Shifting Gears star teased in an interview with WIVB the general idea of what the next installment of the animated film would be about and teased an “unbelievable” scene with his character.

“I can tell you that it’s a lot about Jessie. Tom [Hanks] and I do — Woody and I — do realign. And there’s an unbelievable opening scene with Buzz Lightyears. I can give you that, but I can’t give you much more.”

Jessie is the cowgirl rag doll counterpart to Woody, who first appeared in 1999’s Toy Story 2 and was voiced by Joan Cusack.

Allen previously teased the film after completing his first session in the recording studio, telling Collider in a December 2024 interview, “Well, I don’t know what I’m supposed to say. Yes, I just did the first five-hour session for Buzz, probably a week ago. It’s really, really weird to get back in it. I can’t tell you anything.”

Allen praised the sequel, saying that “it’s a very, very clever story,” adding, “I don’t really believe it’s about the money. I’m sure they want it to be a success, but that’s not why they did it. Had they not come up with a brilliant script, they wouldn’t have done it and they wouldn’t have called me and Tom [Hanks]. It’s really clever.”

He continued, “It was really a struggle to get, and then maybe two hours in, I was doing Buzz. I’m so blessed to be Buzz Lightyear, to be honest. It’s gonna be fun. I think we’re a year out. I’ve gotten up to the third act. We’ll do the third act. And then, we’ll go back and clean it. And then, I’ll do it about five more times. It’s a really good story, guys. It’s really good.”

Toy Story 5 is set to premiere in theaters on June 19, 2026.
