All is well on Beechwood Island now that Cadence (Emily Alyn Lind) has her memory back — or is it?

The We Were Liars season 1 finale, titled “My Friends Are Lying in the Sun,” left the door open for more from the Sinclair family. However, a possible second season wouldn’t follow Cadence, since her story has since come to an end.

After present-day Cadence in Summer 17 remembers that she and The Liars — Johnny (Joseph Zada), Mirren (Esther McGregor) and Gat (Shubham Maheshwari) — set fire to their grandfather Harris’ (David Morse) house but doesn’t have all the details just yet.

“It makes sense now, I can’t believe we did it,” Cadence says, before searching for more memories. “The moms haven’t been fighting, and Gat was invited back. It worked.”

Emily Alyn Lind didn’t really keep that We Were Liars twist in the back of her mind while filming the Prime Video show. Flashback scenes to Summer 16 showed The Liars planning the ultimate sign of rebellion.

“It’s a genius plan but we don’t know how to do arson,” Johnny stated. Cadence explained that if they all set fire to one floor in the house as Gat waited at the dock as the getaway driver, it would turn out perfectly.

In Summer 17, Cadence starts to put together the night of the fire, initially realizing that she left the family’s dogs in the house while it burned. After a conversation with Harris, she remembers that the beloved pets weren’t the only things that perished in the fire.

The Liars eventually tell Cadence what happened, revealing that she was the only one who made it out of the fire alive. Meaning, she’s been talking to Johnny, Mirren and Gat’s ghosts all summer.

We Were Liars got viewers invested in the Sinclairs matriarchs — but who should play the younger versions of the beloved moms in the Family of Liars prequel series? Based on E. The remainder of the episode takes place in Summer 17 as Cadence says her goodbyes to the ghosts of The Liars one by one. Now that she remembers, they are able to cross over to the other side. Cadence’s mom, Penny (Caitlin FitzGerald) also offers her a choice to continue living as a Sinclair or move on from the family in the wake of the tragedy. Cadence chooses the latter.

“I know the loss of great loves now and I know the work of rebuilding from ashes. Even in the shadow cast by what used to stand tall,” she says. “I was once a Sinclair and I suppose I will always be a Liar because Liars, you should know, are forever.”
