Amanda Knox is finally getting to share her side of the story about being accused of roomate Meredith Kercher’s murder in Hulu’s The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox.
Knox made headlines in 2007 when she was accused of murdering her roommate Kercher while they were studying abroad in Perugia, Italy. Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison after she and then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were both convicted of the crime despite a lack of evidence.
An appellate court later found the former couple not guilty in 2011, but they were again found guilty three years later during a retrial. The Italian supreme court cleared Knox of Kercher’s murder in 2015, and she was exonerated.
Ivorian migrant Rudy Guede was sentenced in 2008 to 30 years in prison for Kercher’s murder after his DNA was identified at the crime scene. His sentence was later reduced, and he was released from prison in November 2021.

Amid the public interest in the case, Knox’s experience was told in various scripted and unscripted projects, but she usually wasn’t involved. The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox made Knox feel “gratitude” for the chance to be involved.
“It really comes down to this idea of do I have a voice and does my voice matter in how a story is told? That is what Hulu has recognized, and they’re taking a chance on that to say, ‘Yes, actually the subject does have a perspective that is valuable and that matters,’” she exclusively told Us Weekly in March 2025. “And we don’t have to pretend that this world is full of objective screenwriters who are not bringing their own stuff to the project. I think that that’s a really interesting experiment that is being made right now.”
Knox continued: “And of course, I’m really honored to work alongside Monica [Lewinsky], who is my mentor. She’s executive producing as well. I can’t speak a lot about it yet because we’re still in production. But I’ll just say that it is another manifestation of me having the opportunity to be recognized as someone who has a valuable perspective.”
The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox is an eight-episode series that will chronicle the period after Knox was wrongfully accused, her time in prison and her journey to freedom. Margaret Qualley was originally set to play Knox in Hulu’s scripted series, but she exited the project and Grace Van Patten replaced her.

According to the official synopsis, Hulu’s limited series is inspired by the story of how Knox “was wrongfully convicted for the tragic murder of her roommate, Meredith Kercher, and her 16-year odyssey to set herself free.”

The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox premieres with two episodes on August 20, 2025, followed by new episodes weekly.
Who Makes Up the Cast of ‘The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox’?
In addition to Patten, the show also stars Sharon Horgan, John Hoogenakker, Francesco Acquaroli, Giuseppe De Domenico and Roberta Mattei. Grace’s sister, Anna Van Patten, joined her on set in the role of Knox’s sister.

What Has Amanda Knox Said About How ‘The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox’ Tells Her Story?
“I’ll say that Grace is f***ing amazing. That’s what I will say,” Knox teased to Us. “I’m in a very, very privileged position as someone who is a subject of a story. Typically someone in my position — the subject — doesn’t get to be an executive producer of their own show.”
Has Meredith Kercher’s Family Reacted to the Series?
Kercher’s loved ones haven’t spoken out about The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox. Before its release, both of Kercher’s parents died, and Knox revealed to Us where she stands with the rest of Kercher’s family.
“Both of her parents have passed. Her mother had a heart condition, even back then. I remember one of the things Meredith told me was that she was in very, very frequent contact with her mom because she had a heart condition, and there were concerns about her health,” Knox recalled to Us. “So she eventually passed because of that condition — but then, also, her father very tragically died. All of a sudden, he was walking around his neighborhood and got hit by a car.”
Knox acknowledged how Kercher’s family have faced even more tragedy since the exchange student’s death, adding, “The remaining part of her family is her two brothers and sister. I have no idea what her brothers think about me. I do know that her sister has spoken very publicly about her regrets that Meredith has been lost in all of this story.”
Is This the 1st Project That Amanda Knox Been Involved In?
Knox has written several books about her experience, but she hasn’t participated in every movie and TV show about the murder. Knox took part in Netflix’s 2016 doc Amanda Knox and wrote Waiting to Be Heard and Free: My Search for Meaning before The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox.
“Writing has always been therapeutic for me. So I’ve been writing this book for many, many years. Some of the things that I incorporated into it were from pieces that I wrote ages ago — and all of them were about processing various aspects of this experience that I went through and trying to understand what they meant — if they meant anything,” Knox shared with Us. “All of these things and how they connected is the really beautiful takeaway for me writing this. It was me realizing the relationships that I have with people after feeling so ostracized and singled out.”
