Rebecca De Mornay talks about ex Tom Cruise

Despite dating almost four decades ago, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle star is still full of appreciation and love for her ex-boyfriend, who has since become one of the biggest names in the entertainment industry.

Tom Cruise and Rebecca De Mornay appeared in Paul Brickman’s Risky Business. The 1983 film has achieved cult status now, and was also the breakout for both Cruise and de Mornay. After meeting on the set for the first time in 1982, the two dated for nearly three years.

“I’m really proud of him…I’m really, really proud of him,” De Mornay said about the Mission: Impossible actor in her recent interview with Page Six. “He’s like, ‘I am Top Gun and that’s what America really wanted,’ and so he’s fulfilled it,” she added, calling Cruise a “major chord” and herself, a “minor chord.” “He is a brilliant, brilliant interpreter of what the zeitgeist is.”

The 65-year-old actress continued, “I’m really, really proud of knowing him from when we were in the suburbs of Chicago and knowing what he wanted and where it is now.” She added, “We started this together, and look what he did with it.”

Following the groundbreaking success of Risky Business, Tom Cruise never looked back. From blockbuster franchises like Mission: Impossible to critically acclaimed pieces like Eyes Wide Shut, A Few Good Men, and Jerry Maguire, he remains one of the most popular actors worldwide.

Meanwhile, Rebecca de Mornay’s latest film, Saint Clare, premiered on digital platforms and limited theatres on July 18, 2025.
