Coogler is spearheading a reboot of The X-Files, the iconic sci-fi drama about two FBI special agents who investigate mysterious paranormal cases known as the “X-Files.” Created by Chris Carter, The X-Files combined a “Monster of the Week” format, where the episode focused on a singular case or mutant, with an overarching arc for the season.
While speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Coogler said he intends to implement similar storytelling techniques for the reboot.
“It wouldn’t be X-Files if we didn’t do both,” Coogler said about the show’s format. “We intend on having both monsters of the week and also the overarching conspiracy.”
Fresh off the success of Sinners, Coogler has the power and the clout to make anything he wants. Why is he then choosing to work on a television reboot instead of another movie?
“That show is what I used to watch with my mom, bro. It’s one of the most beautiful American television shows ever made, I think,” Coogler explained. “And for me, that’s what it’s all about. It’s like when you, as an artist, try to capture something that you were influenced by, and you make something totally new. Anytime you watch a TV show or movie where there’s a skeptic paired with a believer, and they’re trying to solve a case, like True Detective Season 1, for instance, it comes up so many times.”
Coogler is currently working on The X-Files and will complete that before moving to Black Panther 3. Coogler’s X-Files reboot does not have a premiere date.
Danielle Deadwyler is rumored to be the lead of the new show. When asked about Deadwyler’s involvement in another interview, Coogler said, “I can neither confirm or deny.”
Coogler also remained silent on whether the show’s original stars, Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, will reprise their roles as Dana Scully and Fox Mulder.
