Netflix has officially acquired the distribution rights to the untitled shark movie from Sony Pictures. Recently, streamer announced its newest exclusive global pay-1 deal with Sony Pictures, which reportedly cost more than $7 billion.
This acquisition comes after the upcoming movie was recently pulled from the studio’s theatrical release calendar. Per Deadline, producer Adam McKay confirmed that they’re currently targeting a 2026 streaming release for the movie. This marks McKay’s latest collaboration with the streamer, after 2021’s star-studded black comedy Don’t Look Up.
“We couldn’t be more excited to be back in business with all our friends at Netflix on this film,” McKay said in a statement. “We had a great experience together on Don’t Look Up and look forward to working with them to make this an event streaming release in 2026.”
Who is leading Netflix & Sony’s new shark movie?
The untitled shark thriller movie will be led by BAFTA nominee Phoebe Dynevor, Hocus Pocus 2 star Whitney Peak, and Academy Award nominee Djimon Hounsou. This project will officially reunite Dynevor and Netflix, following her breakout role in the popular period romance drama Bridgerton. Further details about the plot and its characters are still under wraps.
The project is written and directed by Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Wirkola. He’s best known for his work on 2009’s satiric horror movie Dead Snow, the action fantasy movie Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, 2017’s sci-fi action movie What Happened to Monday, and 2022’s Christmas action comedy Violent Night. McKay is producing with Kevin Messick through their HyperObject Industries banner. Wirkola is also serving as a producer.
