For the first time in the history of the Friday the 13th franchise, fans are actually going to spend Halloween season at Camp Crystal Lake.
Peacock officially announced that Crystal Lake, the long-awaited prequel series centered on the Voorhees family, will premiere on October 15.
It’s kind of crazy when you think about it. Since the original Friday the 13th hit theaters back in 1980, every movie in the franchise has landed somewhere between February and August.
Most of them dropped in either May or August. Somehow, across twelve films and decades of sequels, reboots, and machete-fueled chaos, the franchise never actually released anything during the Halloween season.
That finally changes with Crystal Lake. So this year, horror fans can head into spooky season with Jason Voorhees lurking in the background once again. Well… a younger version of him, anyway. Probably without the hockey mask obsession just yet.
The new Peacock series stars Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees, Jason’s mother and the original killer from the first Friday the 13th movie.
For anyone somehow avoiding spoilers for the last 45 years, Pamela snapped after camp counselors failed to save her son from drowning at Camp Crystal Lake. That tragedy kicked off the franchise’s entire blood-soaked legacy.
While Peacock is still keeping most plot details locked away, the series is expected to dig deeper into Pamela’s descent, her relationship with young Jason, and whatever nightmare fuel was brewing around Camp Crystal Lake before the killings truly exploded into legend. And yes, Jason will reportedly appear in the show.
There’s also something really fun about the release schedule itself. With eight episodes planned, Crystal Lake should carry fans through most of October and beyond, potentially even lining up with the year’s final Friday the 13th in November.
Getting Crystal Lake made in the first place was its own horror story. The project spent years stuck in development chaos while the Friday the 13th rights situation dragged on.
At several points, it honestly felt like the series might never happen. But, the show pushed through and got made. Now, the countdown to returning to Camp Crystal Lake has officially begun.
