Nearly 20 years ago Marvel and Sony were developing a video game titled Daredevil: The Man Without Fear for PlayStation 2. The game ended up being scraped, but all these years later footage and a prototype of the game has surfaced online!
The 17-minute video features all the gameplay aspects of the game and the Daredevil combat mechanics. It comes complete with the title screen, menus, and the game’s opening story narration. The story for the game is told from the perspective of Matt Murdock himself, who mentions other characters like Foggy Nelson, Kingpin, and Elektra.
The game was supposed to feature a series of vignettes, each one highlighting some of Daredevil’s most iconic story arcs and characters. Apparently, Frank Miller’s run on the comic served as a heavy inspiration and the game would have included characters like Elektra, Bullseye, Kingpin, and even the Punisher.
There were a lot of issues with the game’s development of the game because the creative team couldn’t agree on certain aspects of it. It was after the Ben Affleck Daredevil movie was announced that they changed the whole thing, and it went into an open-world Grand Theft Auto type game.
Development seemed to be going well with the changes for a while, but Sony and Marvel just had different visions that ultimately killed the project. Sony wanted inventive gameplay mechanics and Marvel wanted to stick closer to the simple stuff and adhere to the character’s roots. They just couldn’t get on the same page, which led to the project’s demise.
