Marvel has been on a bit of a losing streak recently when it comes to online perceptions. John Walker actor Wyatt Russell assures fans that Thunderbolts will be something different than the standard affair.

2023 has been far from the best year in Marvel’s history. It seems almost every film in their recent catalogue has been called out for shoddy VFX and an even shoddier story. However, it seems as though Thunderbolts is taking steps to actively avoid this fate, with Wyatt Russell assuring fans it’s not the standard Marvel film they’ve come to know:

“I have confidence it’s gonna be good,” Wyatt explained at a recent 92NY event. “I know everybody is sort of on this Marvel train right now of things not going so well…I know Jake so well and I know how smart Jake is and how much he cares about making something interesting and different and utilizing everyone’s talents to the best of their ability. And the story that I think they’ve come up with is really interesting — I know parts of the story and how the story works, I can’t talk about it.”

“But it’s not a straightforward Marvel movie as you’ve seen in the past,” he continued. “I think that it’s gonna be a lot of fun but I think it will be something that hopefully Marvel fans will look at and go, ‘Oh OK, this is a little different, let’s go hard at it.’ And as far as how we are approaching it, it’s time to go to work a little bit, it’s time to make a good Marvel movie, so let’s do that and work hard at it and don’t take things for granted.”

Not being a “straightforward” Marvel movie can certainly be a double-edged sword. While projects like WandaVision and Loki have earned praise for their innovative approaches to the formula, others like Eternals and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have been lambasted for breaking from the mold. Only time will tell if Wyatt Russell is right about which side of the coin Thunderbolts ends up on.

Who is attached to the Thunderbolts movie?

During Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con presentation in July, it was revealed that Jake Schreier would direct the upcoming Thunderbolts project. Eric Pearson, the writer for Black Widow, had previously written a draft of the script before being replaced by Lee Sung Jin.

Thunderbolts features a star-studded cast, including Julia Louis-Dreyfuss as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as John Walker, Hannah John-Kamen as the Ghost, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes and Harrison Ford as Thunderbolt Ross. Ayo Edebir and Steven Yeun are also on board in undisclosed roles.

Thunderbolts is currently set to hit theaters on July 25, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
