A fantastic second trailer has been released for the film American Fiction, starring Jeffrey Wright (Westworld, The Batman) as Monk, with John Ortiz (Silver Linings Playbook), Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish), Issa Rae (Insecure), Keith David (Armageddon), Erika Alexander (Living Single), Leslie Uggams (Deadpool), Adam Brody (Shazam!), and Sterling K. Brown (This is Us).
The film is written and directed by Cord Jefferson (Master of None, The Good Place, Watchmen), making his feature directorial debut with this film. The screenplay is adapted from the book “Erasure,” by Percival Everett. This initially premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival, where it won the “People’s Choice Award” major prize, and Wright has been in early talks for the Best Actor nominations this awards season. The film has gained a lot of Oscar buzz.
The full synopsis for the film reads:
“American Fiction is Cord Jefferson’s hilarious directorial debut, which confronts our culture’s obsession with reducing people to outrageous stereotypes. Jeffrey Wright stars as Monk, a frustrated novelist who’s fed up with the establishment profiting from the ‘Black’ entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, Monk uses a pen name to write an outlandish ‘Black’ book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.”
I can’t wait to see this movie! Wright seems to have knocked it out of the park with this performance. Check out the second trailer below, and watch American Fiction in select US theaters on December 15th.
