It seems not every idea can survive in a galaxy far, far away. Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss reveal their Star Wars movie idea that was rejected by Lucasfilm.
It seems Star Wars is entering a new renaissance, with fan-favorite projects like The Mandalorian & Grogu seeming to enter production everyday. However, it seems not every idea makes the cut for Lucasfilm’s new vision, with Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss revealing their scrapped plans for a film focusing on the first Jedi:
“We wanted to do The First Jedi,” Benioff explained to The Hollywood Reporter. “Basically, how the Jedi Order came to be, why it came to be, the first lightsaber …”
“And we were annoyed as hell when [Rian Johnson] called his movie The Last Jedi,” Weiss joked. “He completely destroyed the obvious title for what we were working on.”
“[Lucasfilm] ended up not wanting to do a First Jedi story,” Benioff concluded. “We had a very specific story idea in mind, and ultimately they decided they didn’t want to do that. And we totally get it. It’s their company and their IP, but we weren’t the droids they were looking for.”
Ironically enough, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ cancelled Star Wars project seems very reminiscent of James Mangold’s upcoming film focusing on the origins of the force, suggesting Lucasfilm may have had a change of heart once the duo departed the project. Though given how the last season of Game of Thrones ended, it may have been for the best!
The future of Star Wars looks brighter than ever

At the event, Kathleen Kennedy announced that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Dave Filoni and James Mangold are all set to direct their own Star Wars movies.
