According to officials with the Los Angeles Police Department, before the crash, officers had spotted the vehicle driving along Ventura Boulevard in Encino. Officers said the car, a Toyota Camry, was moving without any headlights on, so they used their patrol vehicle’s loudspeakers to tell the driver to turn their lights on.
Police said instead of the driver complying, they sped off. At that point, the officers decided against pursuing the vehicle and went about their night. Moments later, officers said that the driver lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a pole at the intersection of Ventura and Balboa Boulevards. The vehicle quickly caught flames and the officers rushed over to help.

Officers were able to pull two people from the car — the 14-year-old driver and the 18-year-old front passenger. It is reported that at the time, officers were unable to get to the person in the backseat and that passenger died at the scene. Officials later confirmed the deceased was a 16-year-old girl.
Horrifying footage from the scene shows the fiery inferno and how police tried their hardest to break the back windows of the flame-engulfed car to rescue the third passenger but to no avail.

Speaking on the tragic incident, Los Angeles Police Department Captain Jeff Hollis said, “The young kids do unwise things. We all know that. It is absolutely not worth playing with your life with that. This is an absolute tragedy. There are some families that will suffer as a result of this.”
Additionally, investigators reported that the person who reported the vehicle stolen was related to one of the teens in the crash, and they said that the teens took the car without their permission.
At the time of publishing this article, reports noted that the 14-year-old driver and 18-year-old front passenger were receiving medical treatment and were expected to survive. It is unclear if the teen driver will be charged or face other legal punishment for her role in the fatal crash. The investigation is ongoing.
