We recently learned that Paramount Pictures was moving forward with the development of Top Gun 3. Tom Cruise is returning to the franchise, and he’ll be joined by Top Gun: Maverick‘s Miles Teller and Glen Powell. Joseph Kosinski will also return to direct, and the co-writer of Maverick, Ehren Kruger, is currently writing the script.
Powell, who plays Hangman in the franchise, recently addressed the reports of a third film and teased some fun stuff is going to be announced. During an interview with Variety, the actor shared:
“There is going to be some fun stuff being announced soon…but it was confidential to me. I talk to [Maverick director Joseph] Kosinski, Cruise and Jerry [Bruckheimer, producer] all the time. There is stuff happening and it sounds very exciting. I don’t know when I’ll be going back… I’m sure there is a jet waiting for me sometime in the future.”
When previously talking about the possibility of a third Top Gun movie, Kosinski said: “Is there another story that is compelling enough that we need to go back? It seems to me at the end of this film that Maverick has some gas left in the tank. He’s not settling down.”
It going to be really hard to top what they did with Top Gun: Maverick, so I hope they have come up with another great and compelling story and that they are able to at least reach the high bar set by Maverick.
Top Gun 3 could be Cruise’s next project after he’s done shooting Mission: Impossible 8.
