David Parker Ray, popularly known as the Toy Box Killer, was convicted of the abduction, torture, and rape of two women in Elephant Butte, New Mexico. According to FBI records, he was sentenced to more than 223 years in prison. Although he claimed responsibility for killing nearly 40 women from various states, authorities never recovered any of the bodies, and the victims remain unidentified.

The Toy Box Killer was born in 1939 in New Mexico. His parents reportedly abandoned him at a very young age, and his grandparents took care of him. His rough upbringing and the bullying he experienced at school reportedly led to the development of his interest in sadomasochism and bondage. He graduated in 1957 and went on to work a bunch of odd mechanic jobs. The time when Ray committed his first crime is unknown.

After authorities caught him, they conducted a thorough inspection of his home, revealing multiple videotapes documenting his torture of women. According to the U.S. Sun, he also confessed that he dumped the corpses of his victims in a nearby reservoir. Authorities believe that Ray’s crimes might have unfolded over almost 50 long years despite the lack of any solid proof.

The police hoped to interview the Toy Box Killer and get to know more about the number of crimes he committed and the details of each. However, he died of a heart attack right before he was to be interrogated by authorities. He was 62 at the time of his death on May 28, 2002. Even two decades later, Ray’s video tapes and the claimed crimes remain among the most horrific in the world.

Where did the Toy Box Killer get his name?

David Parkey Ray reportedly constructed a cargo trailer that was at the center of his crimes of rape and torture. According to Oxygen, he allegedly hand-crafted sadomasochistic and torture tools that filled up the trailer. Authorities described the trailer as a deadly ‘toy box.’ The most horrific among the equipment was a torture chair that would administer electric shocks.

The Toy Box Killer allegedly held his victims hostage inside his trailer, the toy box, for days together as he tortured and assaulted them repeatedly while he inflicted pain using his customized equipment. Ray talks about the experiences of the victims, but the crimes remain a mystery. Cynthia Vigil, the final victim, was the only one known to have escaped the toy box and brought the crimes to light.

Cynthia Vigil was the Toy Box Killer’s final victim. On March 22, 1999, authorities received calls reporting a woman who was naked with a dog collar attached to her neck. She was reportedly trying to stop cars driving off for help. He held Vigil, a sex worker, hostage in the toy box for two days. Vigil reported that Ray’s girlfriend, Cindy Hendy, was also an accomplice who assisted him in his crimes and later testified against Ray, resulting in a 36-year sentence for her part in the crime.

The investigation to determine the Toy Box Killer’s other victims remains to be on. Authorities have found some jewelry and clothing that they believe may belong to Ray’s victims. FBI records indicated that they found no bodies. Also, sex workers and drug addicts were among his primary victims. Authorities never officially convicted him of murder, but they suspect he killed over 40 women.

David Parker Ray: The Toy Box Killer is a 2019 documentary. It digs deeper into the deadly crimes and murders of David Parker Ray.
