Ozempic has become a hot-button issue in the media over the last several months. This is because it has become widely used by reality TV stars as well as other people with the means to get the drug. There’s a growing trend of them being open about it, and now Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Heather Gay is speaking out about her experience with it.
As many know, Ozempic and other drugs with the same active ingredient are intended to treat Type 2 diabetes. However, more and more people are using the injection to lose weight. In fact, even Dr. Dubrow called it a miracle drug. This is despite there being a shortage and the fact that some people with diabetes don’t have access to it.
Now, Heather is speaking to ABC about the drug and what it means for the body positivity movement and their everyday lives.
Heather starts by discussing her life before taking Ozempic. According to her, the comment that Mary Cosby made about her size on Watch What Happens Live was the least of her worries. She says people had even compared her to a “manatee” and “Shrek” before. She also discussed being influenced by how widespread the use of the drug is.
Heather said, “Everyone I knew was taking these GP1 medications losing weight, and just bragging about how great it was and magical.”
She went on to say, “I didn’t want to show up at another party and see all of my friends 20 pounds thinner and just be resentful.”
Heather feels that social pressure was a big reason for doing the drug. Additionally, Heather says she “started to feel seen” for the first time. This was even after her bestselling book, successful beauty lab, and being on RHOSLC.
She then says that it felt “sad” that she was only starting to get praise and admiration after her weight loss. She also says that her cast members even treated her differently than before.
“I’ve sold out, I’ve given up the banner of you know, accept yourself. And it’s disappointing and sad to know that body positivity was all a big lie,” she shockingly admitted to host Deborah Roberts. “It is better not to be overweight.”
Heather has lost more than 30 pounds since beginning the injections.
The interviewer then asked Heather what message she wanted to send to her daughters.
Heather says, “I want them to feel empowered, but as a mom of daughters, it is a very nuanced razor’s edge because I don’t want to lie to them and say it doesn’t matter what matters is on the inside, but it does matter. I don’t know why that’s the way it is in the world, but that has been my experience.”
