For the past half-century, 70-year-old Roberto Pedreira from Brazil has eschewed traditional hydration in favor of a unique liquid staple: Coca-Cola. Shunning water since his childhood, Pedreira’s exclusive consumption of the popular soft drink has left medical professionals in disbelief. His dedication to Coca-Cola reached a peak of internet fame when footage of him drenching his ice cream with Coke at a Bahia cafe captivated millions.

According to Oddity Central, Pedreira told journalists, “It’s been 50 years since I last drank water. I’ve always disliked it. Every doctor I’ve visited pushes for water consumption, but I’ve always resisted, opting to mix my medication with Coca-Cola instead.” This preference extends to Coke Zero since its 2005 debut, before which he was a regular Coke enthusiast. Joao Victor Paixao, Pedreira’s 27-year-old godson, attests to the disbelief of Pedreira’s beverage choice, stating, “To outsiders, it seems implausible, but he’s been consistent with his soda-only diet for as long as I can remember, even pairing it with ice cream.”
Despite Pedreira’s unconventional diet, he has remained remarkably healthy, with his family noting his successful recovery from COVID-19 and an overall absence of serious illness. “He’s diligent about his health, attending all necessary doctor visits and adhering to prescribed medications. His unique drinking habit is the sole exception,” Victor elaborated.

However, health professionals like nutritionist Greice Furlanetto Arraes caution against substituting soft drinks for water. In local media, Arraes highlighted the detrimental effects of sodas, regardless of their sugar content. “Soda, whether regular or zero sugar, cannot replace water. Regular sodas are high in sugar and additives, leading to weight gain, increased blood glucose levels, and a heightened risk of diabetes and other chronic diseases.”
