A deacon has been arrested in Kentucky after authorities say he scammed an older woman out of nearly half a million dollars over a three-year period.
According to ABC 7 New York, 43-year-old Ephraim Udouso allegedly targeted the woman while serving as an ordained deacon at Dominican Missionaries at St. John’s Church. Investigators say the alleged fraud stretched over several years before the woman’s son discovered suspicious financial activity and reported it to authorities.
Threats Allegedly Made Against Victim’s Son
Law enforcement officials claim that once the woman’s son confronted the situation, Udouso allegedly attempted to extort additional money from him. Authorities say he threatened to put a hit on the son if more money was not provided.
Investigators later executed a search warrant that reportedly uncovered multiple Western Union transactions connected to the case. During the search, authorities also seized computers and cellphones believed to be linked to the alleged scheme.
Charges Filed, Investigation Ongoing
Udouso has been charged with extortion. Officials indicated that additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues. Authorities have not released further details regarding how the alleged scam began or the specific methods used to obtain the funds.
The case remains active as prosecutors review evidence gathered during the search.
For now, investigators say the alleged scheme resulted in financial losses approaching $500,000.
